1970년 대 초 conventional T cell의 effector function을 제어 및 억제할 수 있는 T cell의 존재 가능성이 suppressive T cell이라는 concept(개념)을 도입하여 최초로 제시된 이후, 면역학의 많은 분야에서 regulatory T cell의 생물학적 속성 및 기능을 규명하기 위한 연구가 이루어져 왔다.
이와 같은 지난 수년간의 regulatory T cell에 대한 연구를 통해 thymus에서 由來된 natural CD4+CD25+ regulatory T cell의 development 및 기능에 있어 FOXP3 라는 transcription factor의 중요성이 밝혀졌으며, CD4+CD25+ T cell 이외에 Tr1 cell과 같이 phenotype 및 기능에 있어 다른 종류의 regulatory T cell의 존재가 확인되었다.
